iPhone versus Nexus One deel 1

Deze week was ik in de gelukkige omstandigheid om twee werelden op het gebied van smartphones te vergelijken met elkaar: Apple’s iPhone en de Google Nexus One. Wat mij betreft een vereiste voor ondernemers die succesvol in het 2.0 tijdperk aan de slag willen. Ik zelf ben een smartphone fanaat vanaf het eerste uur toen Microsoft met haar eerste versie van mobile uitkwam via Orange, de SPV. Daarna alle opvolgers zo’n beetje gehad tot en met de HTC Diamond aan toe. Sinds een aantal maanden ben ik overgestapt naar de Google Magic die prima integreerde met de online diensten van Google. Met de Google Nexus One is weer een flinke stap voorwaarts gezet. Mensen vragen aan mij waarom nu Google en niet Apple. Mijn antwoord is dan kort: Google is de waarheid en mijn telefoon combineert al mijn persoonlijke info met de waarheid zoals die bij Google bekend is. Een nietszeggende blik die mij aankijkt rest dan nog hetgeen ik me wel kan voorstellen. Dus laat ik proberen toe te lichten waar nu die verschillen zitten op basis van mijn eigen ervaring van afgelopen week.

Om de iPhone up-and-running te krijgen wordt mij gevraagd om iTunes te installeren, hmmm, dat is toch die muziekwinkel? Enfin ik volg de instructies keurig op en nadat ik de iPhone via een USB kabel aansluit op de pc herkent deze hem direct. Vervolgens wordt mij gevraagd om creditcard gegevens, pardon? Het moet, geen creditcard gegevens dan geen activatie van mijn iTunes account en geen activatie van mijn iPhone. Met verbazing voer ik kijn creditcard gegevens in en vervolg ik mijn aanmelding waarna de iPhone wordt geactiveerd. Uiteraard wil ik in dit 2.0 tijdperk vanaf iedere werkplek via het internet toegang hebben tot mijn agenda, contacten en mail. Via een USB kabel en iTunes, ja die muziekwinkel, synchroniseren vind ik niet van deze tijd, ik wil alles online. Al snel wordt mij duidelijk dat ik dan van de MobileMe dienst gebruik moet maken, een sterk vereenvoudigde versie van Google’s Gmail. Prima, account aanmaken en jawel, weer wordt er gevraagd om mijn creditcard gegevens. Sterker nog, deze dienst kost mij 79 euro per jaar! Met verbazing betaal ik wetende dat tientallen miljoenen mensen mij reeds voor zijn gegaan, Apple chapeau.

Dan de Google Nexus One. Ik heb een Gmail account met zo’n 1.500 contacten erin. Mijn Gmail agenda wordt automatisch in-sync gehouden met Outlook dus ik kan overal vanaf iedere pc bij  mijn spullen. Die spullen zijn veel meer dan alleen mijn contacten, agenda en mails. Het zijn mijn duizenden foto’s die ik vanaf de thuis pc via Picasa bij Google laat back-uppen, het zijn al mijn bookmarks die vanuit Chrome in sync staan, Google Docs etc. Ik zet de Nexus One aan en er wordt gevraagd om mijn Gmail gebruikersnaam en wachtwoord. That’s it. Vervolgens ben ik compleet up-and-running. Geen credit cards, geen betalingen, geen installaties van PC programma’s, it simply works. Sterker nog, mijn ‘oude’ Google Magic met een andere SIM zit tevens gekoppeld aan dezelfde Gmail account. Alles compleet in sync met elkaar.

Vervolgens aan de slag met beide telefoons. Het ziet er werkelijk waar allemaal fantastisch uit. Apple met de appstore, Google met haar market. Beide telefoons voorzien van de nodige sensors en een multi touch screen die nog steeds de nodige oehs en ahs doen opwekken. Tussen al het geweld van waanzinnige user interfaces en animaties gaat wel degelijk een groot verschil tussen beide smartphones schuil. Dat is die waarheid waarmee ik altijd in verbinding sta.
