Gastblog: Duiken achter de brede rug van de boekhouder

Als ik vertel dat ik financiële trainingen voor ondernemers verzorg, krijg ik vaak de volgende reactie: “Ik heb toch een boekhouder!” Meestal reageer ik daar om te beginnen positief op: ‘Goed dat je een boekhouder hebt. Verstandige keuze’, om vervolgens uit te leggen waarom het hebben van een boekhouder niet voldoende is. Dat je uiteindelijk zélf verantwoordelijk bent voor je financiën. Dat je boekhouder terugkijkt en niet vooruit. Dat boekhouders er soms een zooitje van maken, dus dat je wel zelf moet blijven opletten enzovoort. Maar laat ik eerlijk zijn, mijn goedbedoelde argumenten komen meestal niet aan. Psychologisch gezien is dat niet zo vreemd. Je hoort wat je horen wilt. Je hoort wat in het plaatje past. Dus de argumenten waarmee ik tracht ondernemend Nederland #FinancieelBewust te maken, stranden vaak een treurige dood.

In deze blog wil ik het eens over een andere boeg gooien. Ik stel je graag een vraag terug: “Geloof je werkelijk dat het hebben van een boekhouder voldoet?” Neem de tijd om deze vraag even tot je door te laten dringen. Wat weerhoudt jou er eigenlijk van om je te verdiepen in financiën? Als ik de onderliggende reden van de weerstand tegen financiën kan achterhalen, dan kan ik daar iets mee. Dan kunnen we in gesprek. Een blog praat niet terug. Dus laat ik even interpreteren. Als ik de plank volledig missla, lees ik graag jouw reactie. Graag ga ik het gesprek met je aan.

Goed, mijn interpretatie:
Financiën zijn te moeilijk. Zou een reactie kunnen zijn waar ik me goed in kan inleven. Ik ben het er dan ook bijna mee eens. Financiën zijn te moeilijk gemaakt. In essentie zijn financiën (geld en alles wat daar bij komt kijken) helemaal niet moeilijk. Je moet wel een aantal dingen snappen, maar dat lees je in mijn boek of leer je in mijn training. Het probleem is dat veel financieel specialisten er een soort wonderlijk genoegen in scheppen om financiën te brengen alsof het rocket science is. Er wordt gesmeten met veel te ingewikkelde termen, vaak meer dan drie voor één en hetzelfde ding. En er worden ook doorlopend ergerlijk moeilijke financiële producten ontwikkeld.

Wat dacht je van de Collateralized debt obligation. Geloof me, ik wíl het niet eens snappen. Ik kan me er erg over opwinden dat van een prachtig, helder, informatief en waardevol instrument (geld) een ondoorgrondelijk complex ding wordt gemaakt. Het is bijna logisch dat ondernemers liever duiken achter de brede rug van hun boekhouder dan dat ze zich de basis van financiën eigen maken. Als het idee dat financiën te moeilijk zijn de onderliggende reden is, dan durf ik het gesprek wel aan. Of is er een andere reden waarom jij duikt achter de brede rug van de boekhouder? Ik zie je reactie met spanning tegemoet!
