De kunst van innoveren

Velen willen het zijn inclusief ikzelf, innovatief, maar dat valt niet mee. Hebben we dat allemaal wel niet eens dat we denken een briljant idee te hebben dat binnen no time niet zo vooruitstrevend blijkt te zijn? Te ingewikkeld, niet te begrijpen, onuitvoerbaar en ga zo maar door. Dan bestaat er nog de groep pioniers en ondernemers die tegen beter weten in door blijven gaan waar enkelen van overleven. Doorzettingsvermogen en wilskracht die daar vaak aan ten grondslag liggen. Echt innovatief zijn met een idee of concept dat binnen no time door massa’s mensen wordt opgepikt is en blijft een kunst. Later uitgelegd door geleerden als vooraf bedacht en uitgestippeld welnu, ik geloof daar niets van. Succes komt door dingen heel vaak verkeerd te doen, immers ervaring is de som der fouten die je maakt. Eens lukt het, het ‘Dutch dress’ effect.

Met de komst van de iPad werd een voedingsbodem gecreëerd voor de innovators onder ons. Niet alleen de gebruikers ervan maar ook de ontwikkelaars die met iPad iets nieuws en innovatiefs konden gaan doen. Sanoma was er snel bij met de Autoweek in iPad formaat, Volkswagen kwam als eerste met een iPad magazine en de WSJ was er als de kippen bij met een electronische uitgave van haar krant. Betalen dat wel, maar op iPad. Niets nieuws onder de zon dus. Oude wijn in nieuwe zakken, niet innovatief. Immers een iPad magazine is wat mij betreft een website met wat flash erin voor de interactieve en bewegende beelden. Een hoop poeha om niets. Nu.nl die met een iPad app komt waarvan ik me afvraag wat daarvan de toegevoegde waarde is. Nu.nl staat gebookmarked als mijn homepage dus als ik op het icoontje Safari klik ben ik er ook.

Maar ze zijn er wel die innovators en als een duveltje uit een doosje kwamen er de afgelopen weken een aantal voorbij. De meest in het oog springende is wat mij betreft Flipboard. Een magazine op de iPad maar volledig gepersonaliseerde op basis van je Twitter of Facebook account. In één woord, waanzinnig. Al jaren hebben we het over profielen en personificeren met behulp van het internet maar hier is een app ontwikkeld die met recht innovatief genoemd mag worden. Paper.li is een soortgelijk voorbeeld maar dan op het web dus tevens vanaf pc’s te benaderen en op te stellen. Je moet het echt even ervaren om te proeven wat het inhoudt. Er vanuit gaande dat je je Twitter vrienden met zorg selecteert heb je een persoonlijk magazine tot je beschikking dat lekker weg leest en je volledig uptodate houdt. Mooie van dit alles is dat een stukje van de intelligente algoritmes die erachter zitten die het magazine samenstellen van een Nederlander komen, Arthur van Hoff. Gelukkig zit naast de handelsgeest innovatie tevens in onze genen. Ik noem het maar het ‘Dutch dress’ effect om in korte tijd massale aandacht te krijgen. Bij Bavaria was niet zozeer het product innovatief wel de campagne om het WK heen. Een mannenproduct aanprijzen via een indirecte route langs de dames.

Is het aan te leren, innovatief denken? Ik denk dat je er talent voor moet hebben en dat je het tot op zekere hoogte kunt leren door heel veel te doen. Diegene met talent heeft enkele pogingen nodig en diegene met minder talent lukt het misschien nooit. Dergelijke voorbeelden geven wel aan hoe over bepaalde dingen na te denken: anders, niet voor de hand liggend en vanuit andere invalshoeken. Het geeft tevens hoop en geloof dat je het zelf kan omdat grote ‘dingen’ toch vaak uit onverwachte hoek komen. Ik las laatst een mooie quote: ‘soms zijn dingen zo groot dat je ze niet kunt zien’. Laten we het daarop maar houden dan!
