SaaS: als je het echt wilt moet je het er niet over hebben

Gisteren mocht ik aanschuiven bij een ronde tafel sessie georganiseerd door SaaS4Channel. Een platform, opgericht door PartnerPerformance, waarbij branchegenoten kennis met elkaar uitwisselen rondom de onderwerpen Software as a Service en Cloud Computing. Gedurende de ronde tafel werden een aantal stellingen gedeponeerd waar de aanwezigen op mochten reageren en zodoende ontstonden er aardige discussies. In hoeverre is SaaS een enabler voor specialisatie in een specifiek segment en is überhaupt specialisatie benodigd om succesvol te zijn? Het was een aardig gemelleerd gezelschap met een aantal leveranciers die hun oplossingen aanbieden via het SaaS leveringsmodel en tevens een aantal ‘traditionele’ advies organisaties die zich met name richten op de zorg sector bij het optimaliseren en digitaliseren van allerlei bedrijfsprocessen. Wat al snel duidelijk werd, is dat er een groot verschil is in eindklanten: je hebt de grote en de kleine klanten. Een ziekenhuis is een grote klant, niet alleen in omvang maar de processen die binnen de ziekenhuismuren dienen te worden geautomatiseerd zijn complex. Kleine klanten zijn wat mij bertreft de MKB-ers met de nadruk op KB. Bedrijven tot een medewerker of 50.

Daar waar binnen de grote bedrijven en instellingen SaaS en Cloud Computing enorme onderwerpen op zich zijn, al is het alleen al omdat dit grote impact kan hebben op reeds bestaande en aanwezige IT afdelingen, is dat binnen het MKB eigenlijk helemaal niet. Als ik kijk naar ons gebied, onze klanten zijnde ondernemers en accountantskantoren, dan hebben wij het eigenlijk nooit over SaaS of Cloud Computing. Het gaat met name over het digitaliseren en optimaliseren van in ons geval verwerkingsprocessen rondom de boekhouding teneinde besparingen te realiseren en mogelijkheden voor nieuwe diensten te creëren bij de kantoren. Ik blijf ook zeggen dat de eerste groep die het deliverymodel SaaS onbewust omarmt de MKB-ers zijn. En dan nog gaat dit ogenschijnlijk traag. Slechts 7% van alle Nederlandse ondernemingen doet bijvoorbeeld haar boekhouding online, daar is nog veel winst te behalen voor zowel de ondernemer en de accountant. En dan hebben we het ook nog eens over processen die vergaand gestandaardiseerd zijn waarbij de overheid diverse programma’s heeft lopen zoals SBR om dit verder te standaardiseren. Nee, ik heb dat zo eens aangehoord met die grote zorginstellingen en voordat die echt iets met SaaS gaan doen zijn we 10 jaar verder. Technisch is het een enorme uitdaging om vanuit de ‘legacy’ systemen te migreren naar een SaaS model, de bedrijfsprocessen zijn dusdanig complex en zijn bij lange na nog niet gestandaardiseerd en niemand heeft er op dit moment belang bij. Zowel de adviesorganisaties naar dergelijke instellingen hebben er geen belang bij alsmede de zorg instellingen zelf die een IT afdeling hebben zitten die ze niet zo 1-2-3 buiten de deur kunnen zetten.

Dus mijn conclusie naar aanleiding van de ronde tafel gisteren: wil je echt SaaS dan moet je het er vooral niet over hebben. Het is een manier van leveren van functionaliteit die totaal niet relevant is voor waar het at the end om gaat. Het is een totaal andere manier van denken die start bij de leverancier zelf door het er dus vooral niet over te hebben. Is verticalisatie benodigd om succesvol te zijn? Welnee, specialisatie wel. Een specialist in CRM met een Appexchange waar allerhande software partijen aanpalende applicaties voor ontwikkelen. Apple met de AppStore, Google met Android Market. Compleet andere denkwijze, compleet andere bedrijfsmodellen, compleet anders denken. Dus begint een klant uit zichzelf over SaaS maak dan snel dat je weer wegkomt want dat leidt de essentiële discussie alleen maar af.
